Charters at Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway – April 2025
Earlier this week, Steaming Around Yorkshire hosted two memorable photo charters at the beautifully scenic Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway in Cumbria. Taking centre stage was the immaculately turned-out Lancashire & Yorkshire A Class No. 52322, which visited the railway especially for these charters.
Over the course of two days, we were treated to a wide range of photographic opportunities under clear blue skies and glorious spring sunshine – the perfect setting for some classic steam action.

A brief look at the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway
Set in the heart of the southern Lake District, the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway operates along a 3.5-mile heritage line that runs between Haverthwaite and Lakeside at the southern tip of Lake Windermere. The line is known for its beautiful woodland backdrops, riverside curves, and peaceful rural setting.
Day 1 – 2nd April 2025
Day one of our charters saw No. 52322 hauling a short rake of goods wagons – the first dedicated freight charter on the line in over 15 years! This rare recreation of a rural goods working offered a unique opportunity to capture industrial steam in a period-accurate setting.
The combination of early April sunshine, a timeless locomotive, and a perfectly composed rake made for some spectacular photographic results.

Day 2 – 3rd April 2025
On day two, No. 52322 returned to the rails with a beautifully presented mixed train, recreating a typical branch line scene with passenger carriages and a handful of box vans in tow.

We’d like to extend our thanks to Andy Booth, the team at the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway for their warm welcome and support in running these charters, and to the crews and volunteers who helped bring history to life with No. 52322.
Footage from throughout both days will feature on our 2025 review products, ‘Steaming Around Britain 2025’ and ‘From The Air: 2025 Review’.
