Welsh Highland Railway – Russell’s Final Run – April 2025

On the 19th of April 2025, the Welsh Highland Railway saw 2-6-2T ‘Russell’ travel across the Welsh Highland Railway for the final time before been withdrawal for overhaul. Over recent years we’ve been fortunate to witness the locomotive travel between Porthmadog and Dinas multiple times, something we never thought we’d see happen!

Built in 1906 by the Hunslet Engine Company, ‘Russell’ had a distinguished career spanning over a century, with service on both the original and preserved sections of the Welsh Highland Railway. Her powerful and evocative presence on the line captivated enthusiasts and visitors alike, drawing crowds as she powered through the breathtaking landscapes of Snowdonia.

Over recent years, we’ve had the privilege of capturing Russell in action, documenting her trips over the years. The video we’ve shared showcases her performances on the Welsh Highland Railway, with footage taken from multiple journeys spanning from 2019 to 2025.
