Locomotive history:
Built at Brighton Works in 1954, BR Standard Class 2MT No.78022 was one of 65 locomotives constructed to the design of R.A. Riddles. Intended for light passenger and mixed traffic duties, the class combined modern BR Standard features with proven pre-nationalisation practice. No.78022 spent its working life in the south of England, working from depots including Guildford and Tunbridge Wells, before being withdrawn from British Railways service in 1967.
Purchased directly from British Railways for preservation, No.78022 became one of only a small number of surviving BR Standard locomotives. After restoration, it returned to steam in 2003 and has since become a popular performer on heritage railways. Representing the final generation of British steam locomotive design, No.78022 provides a tangible link to the last years of steam operation on Britain’s railways.
