Disc 1 captures some of the oldest working steam locomotives still operational at heritage railways across the country. It showcases locomotives built between 1825 and 1924, including the world-famous LNER A3 No.60103 ‘Flying Scotsman’ and SR Caledonian Tank No.419.
Disc 2 captures a selection of locomotives built by the “Big Four”. With the formation of the four large railway companies in 1923, a number of new steam locomotive classes were introduced. Featured examples include LNER A4s No.60007 ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ and No.60009 ‘Union of South Africa’.
Disc 3 captures locomotives built in the final years of the “Big Four” companies and the early days of British Railways, following the nationalisation of the railways on 1 January 1948. Featured locomotives include Great Western “Manors”, early BR Standards, and a range of industrial engines built to work at collieries and haul freight trains.
Disc 4 features locomotives built in the final years of steam, including the BR Standard classes constructed across the country, together with several locomotives completed in preservation. These include LNER A1 No.60163 ‘Tornado’, LBSCR H2-class Atlantic No.32424 ‘Beachy Head’, and GWR Grange No.6880 ‘Betton Grange’.
