Description

The highly successful Keighley & Worth Valley Railway Winter Steam Gala was blessed with a touch of snow over the three days in February. The three day event featured the long awaited return of LNWR ‘Coal Tank’, the only one to survive into preservation and visiting engine LNWR G2A No.49395.

One of the highlights of the event was the launch of newly overhauled LNWR ‘Coal Tank’ No.1054, the engine was returned to steam carrying its BR livery and number 58926. ‘Coal Tank’ No.58926 is now one of the oldest operational steam engines after been built in 1888 at Crewe Works. The engine has now undergone its third restoration in preservation and completed by the Bahamas Locomotive Society at Ingrow West.

The event featured visiting engine LNWR G2A No.49395 now part of the National Collection. 49395 is also the only member of its class to survive into preservation and was overhauled at Crewe by Pete Waterman.

On the Friday of the event the two engines 58926 & 49395 hauled a service from Keighley to Oxenhope recreating the final train from Abergavenny to Merthyr organised by the SLS. ‘Coal Tank’ No.58926 was significant to the event as this was the exact ‘Coal Tank’ that took part in the event. G2A No.49395 was re-numbered to No.49121 to reflect the G2A class of engine that took part.

A wide collection of footage is featured on the DVD from all three days of the event; the event was blessed with a layer of snow along the five mile branch allowing for some unusual seasonal shots. Trackside footage is included an aspect not available to the general public. A wide collection of freight, vintage, express and passenger services are featured throughout the DVD.

Engines that also participated at the event included:
– LMS 2MT No.41241 (Now in its final year of traffic)
– LMS 4F No.43924
– BR 4MT No.80002
– L&Y ‘Ironclad’ No.957 (Now in its final year of traffic)
