Description

The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, one of the very few complete branch lines in the UK, held several successful events and hauled thousands of passengers, along the picturesque five mile branch line throughout 2020.

Throughout the year, the railway has hosted events including their famous spring steam gala, ‘Back In Steam’ services following an enforced closure due to Coronavirus, celebrated the centenary of LMS 4F No.43924, the introduction of ‘The Elf Express’ plus much more.

Spring Steam Gala – 6th – 8th March 2020:

The Spring Steam Gala was held during March 2020, just before the first enforced lockdown of 2020. Visiting the railway was GWR 41xx No.4144 from the Didcot Railway Centre which ran alongside headliners LMS 6P No.45596 ‘Bahamas’ and LMS 5MT No.45212. Over the 3 day event, a collection of locomotives put on an action packed show including passenger, vintage, and freight services.

BR 2MT No.78022 Photo Charters – 26th & 27th July 2020:

Prior to re-opening to the public, resident locomotive BR 2MT No.78022 was involved in two days of photo charters, which also allowed the railway to trial their new way of running socially distanced services. BR 2MT No.78022 is seen hauling three suburban coaches at various locations between Damems Junction and Oxenhope.

‘Back In Steam’ Services:

Passengers returned to the railway during August 2020, ‘Back In Steam’ services ran throughout the summer and autumn utilising a variety of compartment stock, hauled by 4F 43924, 2MT 78022 and 2MT 41241.

The Big Goods Centenary Year:

2020 saw sole surviving Midland 4F No.43924 celebrate its 100th birthday. Originally built in 1920, 4F No.43924 was the first locomotive to leave Barry Scrap Yard in 1970, destined for Haworth. To celebrate the occasion, LMS 4F No.43924 hauled services throughout October with a special headboard.

The Elf Express:

2020 saw the introduction of ‘The Elf Express’, an alternative to the annual Santa Special services due to Covid. Throughout December, steam hauled services carried passengers from Oxenhope to Kringle Town Station (Keighley). The railway was transformed into a winter wonderland, with stations, locomotives and coaching stock decked with Christmas attire.
